Who makes Ellington?

Mediaphormedia, the interactive and software division of a forward-thinking news, information, and media company that makes smart, easy to use solutions like Ellington and award-winning websites. We're a lot like you, too, we want great tools that get out of the way and help us do what we do best.

Can we run more than one site with one Ellington license?

Ellington is designed to support publishing to multiple sites (with shared or unique templates) from a single installation, which consists of one database and content management interface. Ellington is licensed for use on a per media-entity (radio station, newspaper, television station, magazine, etc.) basis. Ellington can be licensed for multiple entities, corporations, and more – contact us for additional information.

What are the system requirements to use Ellington's content management interface?

Since Ellington's content management interface is web-based there's no software to install. All you need is a web browser and an internet connection. While Ellington's user interface will function in any web browser, some features require a modern desktop browser with Javascript enabled.

What are the web server requirements for Ellington?

Ellington runs on an open-source web platform, sometimes called LAMP, that consists of Linux (we prefer Ubuntu), Apache, PostgreSQL, and Python. Ellington's hardware use is designed to scale with your traffic. For small sites, a single midrange server may suit you just fine. For larger sites, Ellington supports multiple redundant web application and database server tiers, sometimes referred to as n-tier.

Can we make our own customizations to the Ellington source code?

Your programmers write custom applications with the Django framework that run alongside Ellington in the same interface and interact with Ellington's data through the provided APIs. If you want to customize the source code of Ellington itself, a source code license is available as a one-time additional fee of 50% of the initial license cost. Purchasing a source code license allows you to modify and extend Ellington's code to suit your needs.

Do we need our own programmers to use Ellington?

Not at all. Ellington is designed to meet the online publishing needs of newspapers, and offers a flexible platform for your own designers and HTML developers (or an outside web development firm) to design and build your site around Ellington. And we'll install and configure everything for your environment.

But everyone's requirements are unique, and many newspapers have their own programming staff to develop custom tools and functionality. Because Ellington is built on open standards (like the Python programming language and Django), there are a lot of professional developers and firms who can help.

We also offer custom development and consulting services for Ellington on a contract or hourly basis. Use our contact form to request more information.
